Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, or EMDR, is an evidence-based therapeutic technique that is used to process traumatic events from your past. Everyone experiences trauma in their lives--sometimes it is a major trauma, and more often it is a minor trauma. A traumatic experience, or series of experiences, creates neural pathways outside of the normal brain functioning. Once these pathways are formed they are often utilized when dealing with non-traumatic experiences, which causes distress and can lead to anxiety and depression. EMDR is a therapeutic technique that focuses on target memories while experiencing bi-lateral stimulation of the body to reincorporate the traumatic neural pathway into the brain. This results in a relief of negative symptoms for the individual. I utilize EMDR with both children and adults in conjunction with other therapeutic techniques.
